Jacob (Israel) such a good parent

Genesis 37:3 says, “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors.”  So, Jacob has favorites.  Isn’t that kind of bad.  Now I understand that parents do sometimes relate to one child more than others but a good parent will keep this well hidden.  Will try to find common interests with the other child and therefore maintain more of an even bond with all children.  That being said in this culture the oldest son would be the one who should receive the love and blessings from the father.  Maybe Jacob doesn’t understand this because he stole his brothers birthright.
