Why didn’t god like Cain's offerings? Gen 4.5 says “unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.” Is this because god likes the smell of burnt flesh? It was the fruit of his labor just like Able. I don’t get it.

This one has bugged me for years. I had two younger siblings so fairness amongst brothers and sisters was a hot topic for me - and this just made me think that God was abitrary, random and impossible to please.
